A2 Certificate of Competence

This certificate is a great way to prove your knowledge with a CAA recognised qualification

What does it allow you to do?

The A2CofC allows you to fly legally in more places

The minimum level of qualification that anyone who flies a drone (other than a toy) in the UK is to pass the online test on the CAA website.

Once you have passed this and have a Flyer ID (and Operator ID if your drone weighs more than 250g OR is fitted with a camera) you may fly your drone only in what the CAA class as the A3 subcategory of the 'Open' category, ie not within 150m horizontally of built-up areas including commercial and industrial as well as residential areas.

This is fine if you only want to fly in the countryside, but even there, you are not allowed to fly within 50m horizontally of uninvolved persons.

Once you have been trained for the A2 CofC and have passed the theoretical examination you are able to do the following:

  • Fly your drone weighing up to 2Kg (ie Mavic Air 2, Mavic Pro or Mavic 2 models) in a built up area (no closer than 50m to uninvolved people)

  • Fly your drone weighing up to 500g (ie Mavic Air or Spark) close to people, but not intentionally over them.

  • More options will become available when the new 'C' marked drones start to hit the market with extra safety features built in.

  • It also gives you a recognised qualification that may be asked for if you wish to fly in some areas with a sub 250g drone, for example when asking for permission to fly in a restricted area it shows that you have taken extra training and are more likely to be authorised.
